The Bregado Flax Educational Centre Primary School officially welcomed its adopter BVI Cable TV to the family in a brief ceremony held yesterday at the school.
The school was officially adopted under the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Adopt-A-School Programme making it the seventh school to be adopted under this initiative. The school received an initial contribution of $5,000 from its adopter. In a brief ceremony held at the school
Minister of Education and Culture the Honourable Andrew Fahie thanked Cable TV for joining the programme and explained that this initiative is more than the financial contribution made by the companies. “This programme is not only about the financial contributions it is about understanding that the business community also has a role to play in the education of our children,” the Minister said.
Minister Fahie added, “The more everyone gets involved in education the more young people we can save and in turn make a future for them.”
At the ceremony, Premier Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE also expressed his gratitude to the company and said that the Adopt-A-School Programme is very significant. He said that this programme is good for businesses and also for the children. “It is good for the children to see that businesses in the BVI have taken an interest in their schools,” the Premier said. “Businesses can also benefit because they need qualified and well educated people in order for them to continue to flourish,” the Premier added.
Principal of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre Primary School Mr. Hilroy George said that after many attempts to get the school adopted he is pleased to see that it has finally come to fruition. “We can soon begin to enjoy the benefits of being able to purchase resources and initiate programmes that can enhance our students learning through the development of their cognitive structure,” he said.
Mr. George said that now they will be able to develop the school’s extra curricula activities in the areas of music, dance and arts.
General Manager, BVI Cable TV Ms. Luanne Hodge told the gathering that her company was eager to adopt a school. “Education is very important and you the students are our future, you are all our future leaders and I welcome you into the BVI Cable TV family,” she said.
Vice chair of the Adopt-A-School Programme Mrs. Carleen Parsons is encouraging other companies to step forward and adopt a school. “The Adopt-A-School Programme is set up to bring companies together so that we can improve our schools,” she exclaimed.
The Adopt-A-School Programme was launched by the Ministry of Education and Culture in October, 2007. A total of seven primary schools have already been adopted by private firms under this programme of which the main purpose is to provide a necessary link between schools and donor organisations and to educate and ensure that each school environment is conducive to a dynamic learning experience.
