Thursday July 1, 2010
The results from an electromagnetic radiation study that was conducted in mid February by Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) in conjunction with the University of the West Indies (UWI) will be revealed to the public at a forum on 6 July.
Speaking on the importance of conducting such a survey, Chief Executive Officer at TRC, Mr. Tomas Lamanauskas stated, “the study is very important in responding to concerns of the residents of the Virgin Islands. Its results will enable us and other government authorities to decide if and what further actions may be needed to ensure the health of the public within the Territory is protected in accordance with the best international practices.”
TRC Deputy Director of Technical and Operations, Mr. Gregory Nelson told the Department of Information and Public Relations that as part of the study a total of 78 measurements were taken at 27 locations on Tortola, Anegada, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke to measure the cumulative radio frequency radiation in the BVI. “The sites were strategically chosen to include base transceiver stations located near populated areas and at places where complaints originated,” Mr. Nelson stated.
The public forum will take place at the Moorings Conference Room at 7 p.m. The forum will provide an opportunity for the public to hear the results, give feedback and ask questions about the survey.
